Postpartum Self-Care During COVID-19

Image
People often imagine pregnancy as a time of hopes and dreams filled with positivity, but often moms can feel very different than they expected even if the pregnancy has been a long-time plan. Working through that “mom-guilt” can be one of the most difficult and most important things to be able to do during pregnancy and postpartum. Primary caregivers often encounter feelings of shame, embarrassment, or guilt surrounding the decisions they make in course of pregnancy and raising their children. During the covid-19 pandemic, increased fear, anxiety, and isolation it may feel even harder to manage the stress and anxiety of navigating a new arrival. While these feelings may never dissipate entirely, there are steps you can take to help keep them in check and use them to your advantage. Set Boundaries.  Setting clear boundaries and expectations can be really hard, and without them you may be left feeling that increase in guilt. Letting others know ahead of time what you need and practic...

Counseling for Autistics

Image
Finding a Counselor It can be difficult to find a counselor who not only understands Autism but can also engage in perspective-taking to understand the individual experience of Autism. Autism, as Autistics and those who are passionate about neurodiversity know, is not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis. There are many individual differences, contexts, and various factors that influence how one experiences Autism. This, combined with society’s emphasis on making Autistics “look” neurotypical and lack of awareness and knowledge can make Autistics hesitant or even avoidant of counseling. Yet, counseling can be beneficial with the right therapist and therapy can be successful. Counseling and therapy in a broader sense are similar and essentially equivalent terms for talk and play therapy. I am writing today to share some benefits of therapy for Autistic people. Benefits of counseling for Autistic People: Once a relationship of trust has been established, and even prior to the first appointment,...

IEP’s and 504’s- What are they, and does your child need one?

Image
The world of education can be confusing for many parents, especially when your child is struggling in school. You may have heard about ‘IEP’s’ and ‘504’s.’ What are they, what’s the difference between them, and most importantly, does your child need one? First off, what are they? An IEP is an Individual Education Plan, which is a comprehensive legal document that outlines the services and accommodations needed for a student with a disability. A 504 plan is also an individual plan that outlines accommodations needed for those with disabilities, but does not include specialized educational services. The name ‘504 plan’ arises from Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities who are in need of accommodations. IEP’s and 504 plans are both legal documents, and both outline accommodations for the student that need to be made under federal law. Both documents require an evaluation through the school to determine eligibility. An...
