Is it Possible to Have Anxiety and PTSD?

Image
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting around 40 million adults-almost 1 in 5 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that almost 300 million people, across the globe, have an anxiety disorder. Approximately 1 in 6 individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms will suffer from anxiety according to some research. Although we do not know exactly why they coexist, worrying is one of the most commonly reported symptoms of PTSD. The following are possible reasons individuals with PTSD can also experience significant symptoms of anxious distress: Worry can become amplified in a hyper-aroused emotional state, to the point where it becomes difficult to overcome. Many people may turn to their worrying as a way to cope with stressful situations. People can use worry as a distraction to keep their concerns and worries hidden from others. Another potential reason is that both conditions are induced by similar experiences. A prior e...

Image
We all have that moment where we feel as if life has taken its toll on us. This emotional tension or unnecessary pressure is what most of us know as stress. There are very many factors in our environment that make us feel under pressure or emotional strain. Bosses and colleagues in jobs, relatives, and neighbors at home or even personal issues such as lack of enough sleep are all possible causes of stress. Behavioral Activation and Community Events Post COVID-19

Image
Scheduling and then engaging in pleasurable activities, also called behavioral activation in the mental health world, is a therapy technique that is often used to treat individuals with depression and anxiety. Research consistently demonstrates that when we experience an increase in mental health symptoms, we are likely to begin isolating more. Inadvertently, we may not notice that we are not socializing as much or are not taking part in previously enjoyed endeavors. COVID-19 of course led nearly all of us to engage in fewer social endeavors. Scientists believe that, aside from the anxiety that COVID-19 itself induced, the related lifestyle changes involving isolation and the removal of pleasurable activities from our lives has resulted in significant mental health sequelae. As creatures of habit, it may take an extra push to get back into socializing and engaging in pleasurable pursuits. If you believe that these can be done safely,  Behavioral Health Clinic staff   encourage...

Finding The Counselor That Is Right For You

Image
So often people struggle to meet with a counselor, and on top of that it can often take more than one try to find a counselor that you connect well with. Research shows that your relationship you have with your counselor is a strong predictor of whether or not counseling has a positive outcome (Ardito & Rabellino, 2011). This means that it is especially important to find a counselor that really understands you and meets your needs. Knowing that finding the right counselor is a common task shared many, these are some points to consider when you are seeking a counselor: 1. Does your personality work well with their personality? Counselors are human, and just like you have some people that you naturally connect with and some you don’t, sometimes connections just don’t happen. This doesn’t mean that your personality is flawed or any one counselor’s personality is better or worse in performing counseling, it simply means that it might take more than one try to find a counselor with whom...
